Chunghwa Telecom President Shui-Yi Kuo: To Build a Digital and Smart Island Country with 5G Technology

Aug 26, 2020

With 5G to become a reality soon, 5th generation mobile network (5G) is undoubtedly the most popular topic recently. But what exactly does 5G mean? Mr. Shui-Yi Kuo, the President of Chunghwa Telecom, gave us a precise explanation, “5G is to jump from second to millisecond!”

As Taiwan enters the 5G generation, how will 5G help us build new business model of our daily life? President Kuo of Chunghwa Telecom, the leading telecommunication company in Taiwan, had an intensive interview with GASE to provide our readers a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s 5G smart city new generation.

The Launch of 5G – Every Milliseconds Count

President Kuo explained that 5G has three core characteristics, naming “fast, low, large”, which represents fast speed, low latency and large connections. This upgrade of the Internet service from 4G will allow different industries to accomplish digital transformation and strengthen their connections through advanced infrastructure.

For the consumers, “Interest Speed” is the biggest advantages of 5G. The high bandwidth of 5G accelerates the transmission speed to 10Gps, which is 100 times of 4G’s transmission speed, 100Mbps. Also, the latency of the Internet is only one millisecond, which is one twentieth of 4G Internet. President Kuo also gave us some daily life example of using 5G. “It is faster when competing for game items” as the Internet will not lag or shut down when using 5G. When panic-buying for concert tickets or train tickets, the “loading” page will not keep appearing as before. Professor Kuo humorously said, “In the 5G generation panic-buying for tickets will be competing in millisecond, instead of seconds as in the time of 4G.”

Digital Economy – Open up new business model of B2B2X

The faster and more stable Internet can directly benefit the entertainment and streaming industry. Moreover, 5G can connect more diverse devices from long-distance and create new frontier for Smart City and Smart Manufacturing.

The development of Smart City involves all aspects of daily life and industrial activities. It also relies on network provider’s vertical cooperation on the Internet infrastructure, cloud computing, and big data with different industries. President Kuo pointed out that 5G will transform the original B2B business model into B2B2X, which provides service to consumers, corporates and their clients, or governments through a telecommunication platform. By combining entertainment, medical service, and education on the B2B2X platform, we can achieve the goal of Smart Transportation, Smart City, Smart Medicine, etc.

Take the unmanned flying vehicle (UAV) as an example, President Kuo said that UAVs have many applications in public area, such as disaster assistance and rescue, area inspection, and instrument examination. UAVs can replace human and arrive on site at once and upload information and images to the Chunghwa Telecom’s UAV Traffic Management (UTM) System immediately through 5G Internet. These data can then be analyzed through AI technology and provide rescue team members to make decisions. This UTM system that combine 5G and AI technology can provide a smart operation system to reduce possible casualties and risks on site.

As for Telemedicine, healthcare industry starts to apply portable devices for distance diagnose, surgery, and monitor through the combination of big data and cloud computing to meet the patients’ need.

Build the Digital Nation and Smart Island with 5G

President Kuo expected that 5G can be popular within three to five years. Their team will focus on “5G+ Transformation” and use the exist foundation from 4G Internet to expand 5G, SDN, and other new generation Internet. Meanwhile, through the strategy of “broad partnership”, Chunghwa Telecom aims to collaborate with other industries to build an interdisciplinary 5G ecosystem for wider smart application services, such as B2B2X.

In the end of the interview, President Kuo expressed that from telephone to the Internet, human communication has advanced within hundred years. The improvement of telecommunication technology and the development of global business have nurtured the technology corporates like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Amazon. Under the global trend of 5G and AIoT, Taiwan’s technology and e-commerce industry can successfully lead the country to a “Digital Nation, Smart Island”.
